Pattachitra Reimagined: Renewing an Ancient Tradition
An Oil Painting Series on Leather Paper by Kimya B. Oskay
2005
The beautiful and precise Pattachitra art, steeped in the rich heritage of Odisha’s and West Bengal’s artistic traditions, showcases its mastery in its elaborate detailing and vibrant storytelling. As an ancient art style, Pattachitra paintings were created using natural colors and dyes applied on cloth or palm leaves. This technique has been in practice for centuries and is deeply embedded in the cultural and religious narratives of the region. In the 20th century, the introduction of oil paints represented a notable adaptation of Pattachitra, showcasing its evolution while maintaining its traditional essence and aesthetics. However, Pattachitra has yet to receive the recognition it deserves within contemporary art circles.
Traditionally, Pattachitra art has been focusing on mythological and religious themes. However, I chose to adapt this ancient art form by depicting fruits. As an artist who values the democratization of art subjects, this decision reflects a shift from traditional elite or exclusively spiritual themes to more ordinary and accessible subjects. Additionally, I sought a subject that could bridge Pattachitra with European artistic traditions, highlighting a fusion of cultural perspectives. Thus, I ended up depicting fruits that are not only suitable for the democratization of art subjects but also resonate with the rich history of European art from the Renaissance through the 19th century.
My Pattachitra artworks are oil paintings on leather paper, a medium that combines traditional leather with the versatility of paper. This series is hand-painted using cotton pieces rather than traditional brushes. By using cotton swabs and pads to apply the paint, I create delicate textures and fine lines that add depth to the artwork. This innovative technique gives each piece a distinctive tactile quality, providing a fresh take on this ancient art form.
Here, you see a revival of an ancient art style through my approach, through the democratization of art subjects in the 20th century. It aims to connect with European art circles, though this reconnection may include some reproach from Pattachitra :)
